Solar panel proofing can sometimes require a little adaptation to suit the roof layout.

For this residential property, Doncaster-based Solar Pigeon Proofing Service was brought in to protect two solar panel systems from roosting pigeons.

While most of the installation was straightforward, the roof layout presented a couple of additional challenges that required some creative thinking.

The Installation

At the rear of the property, an existing pigeon nest beneath one of the solar panels needed to be removed.

Before removal, the nesting material was treated with PX-Ornikill and left to soak for approximately 20 minutes. This helped reduce the risk of bacteria and other pathogens that can be present in bird fouling and nesting material. The team then carefully removed the nest using appropriate PPE before continuing with the proofing installation.

The team used EnviroGuard Black PVC-Coated Mesh with 30mm Premium C-Clips to secure the mesh around the perimeter of the solar panels, creating a physical barrier to prevent pigeons from gaining access underneath.

At the front of the property, the solar panels were arranged in a T-shaped configuration, with roof valleys running down either side of the system.

This created a potential access point where the corners of two panels sat directly above the valleys. If the mesh had simply followed the perimeter of the panels, pigeons could potentially have walked up the valleys, beneath the mesh and gained access underneath the solar array.

Adapting the Mesh to the Roof

Solar Pigeon Proofing Service came up with a simple solution using an additional section of mesh.

The mesh was folded into a U shape and positioned upside down within the roof valley, creating a barrier that prevented pigeons from walking underneath the main perimeter mesh while still allowing rainwater and debris to flow down the valley.

The additional section was secured to the existing mesh and clipped to the solar panels. Two cable ties were also used to prevent it from slipping out of position.

This simple adaptation successfully closed off the potential access route without obstructing the roof valley.

The Result

Both solar panel systems were successfully proofed, with the mesh carefully adapted around the roof valleys to prevent pigeons from gaining access beneath the panels.
