Choosing bird cleaning and disposal supplies

Clean first, then proof

Several deterrents in our range ask for a thorough clean before they go in. The Super BirdXPeller Pro pages advise cleaning old nest sites with an avian disinfectant such as PX Ornikill to remove the birds’ scent, and the Ornaway gel page asks for all guano and nesting material to be cleared first. Once the area is clean, you can choose the right proofing: bird spikes, bird netting, bird repellent gel or solar panel exclusion.

All wild birds are protected and active nests must not be damaged, destroyed or disturbed, so only clear nesting material once you are sure a nest is not in use. Please read bird control and the law before you start.

Large guano clearances can mean working at height or in confined roof spaces. If you would rather have it done for you, you can request a quote.

Cleaning and disposal questions

How do I clean up bird droppings safely?

Wear suitable PPE, such as a guano PPE kit with a P3 mask, gloves and goggles. Then spray the droppings with diluted PX Ornikill to dampen them, so spores do not become airborne, before you clear them away.

How much PX Ornikill do I need?

PX Ornikill is a concentrate that dilutes 1:50 in tap water. The 1 litre bottle makes 50 litres of ready-to-use disinfectant and the 5 litre bottle makes 250 litres.

Should I clean before fitting spikes, gel or a scarer?

Yes. The product pages for our distress call scarers and optical gels both ask for droppings and nesting material to be cleared and the area disinfected first, which also removes the scent that draws birds back.
