Not sure which spike width you need?
The ledge decides this, not the bird. Measure the width you need to cover, then match it to the width between the outer tips. These are the figures from each product page:
- Narrow, 95mm between outer tips, protects areas between 60mm and 125mm wide, £2.04 per metre.
- Medium, 140mm between outer tips, £2.94 per metre.
- Wide, 180mm between outer tips, £3.54 per metre.
- Seagull, 185mm between outer tips and 165mm high on a 40mm base. That is this page, £3.36 per metre. Gulls need the extra height, not just the width.
Polycarbonate instead of stainless steel. Cheaper and non-conductive, and it can be snapped by hand. Defender 4 has 42mm tips and protects 42mm to 100mm, £2.90 per metre. Defender 8 has 150mm tips and protects 150mm to 215mm, £4.32 per metre.
Smaller birds go straight through pigeon spikes. Starlings and sparrows need closer spacing: Starling and Sparrow Spikes or the Small Species Plastic Bird Spike.
Awkward surfaces. Ridge tiles take Triangular Ridge Spikes, chimneys take the Chimney Bird Deterrent Spike, and aerials take the TV Aerial Bird Spikes Kit.
Fixing them. The spike and glue bundles include the adhesive and work out cheaper than buying both separately. If you cannot bond or drill, gutter clips hold spikes on a gutter lip.
