All our nets are manufactured from knotted polyethylene which does not absorb water, so does not stretch and is chemically inert. All of our nets are UV light stabilised for use in direct sunlight all over the globe. as an indication, it is likely to resist UV degradation in average UK sunlight conditions in excess of 10-years.
Our bird nets are constructed from monofilaments designed specifically for bird net systems. They are extruded to 0.3mm thick. They are then twisted into a twine which is 12/6 strands thick.
*Custom Made “Cut-To-Size Nets”
We can manufacture nets to your specific dimensions, we manufacture to the nearest whole metre, i.e. if you require a 22.5m X 31.2m net then we can produce a 23m X 32m net which you can trim on site using netting shears (NT125)
Each order of cut-to-size-nets will incur a £15 “NETCUTFEE” in addition to the per metre charge. The £15 fee is levied per order and not per net, so a quantity of custom nets can be ordered with just one NETCUTFEE charge being levied. The fee will be automatically added to your basket at checkout.
Our Cut-To-Size netting production service is especially popular for nets with one or both dimensions beyond our Stock-Size limit of 20m, or for a large quantity of non stock size nets sub 20m, in order to save on wastage.
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU LEAVE SUFFICIENT TIME WHEN ORDERING CUT-TO-SIZE-NETS
It may be cheaper to buy a larger stock size net than an “exact-fit” custom net
Our pre-cut stock size nets are an alternative if a standard size fits your space.
Despite being of rugged, heavy-duty polyethylene construction, our nets can easily be cut down to size once on site using either our affordable netting shears (NT125).
What mesh size of netting stops starlings and sparrows?
For starlings use 28mm mesh netting, and for sparrows use 19mm. Sparrows are smaller and can get through a 28mm mesh, so if you need to keep out both starlings and sparrows, choose the 19mm sparrow netting, which stops both. If starlings are the only problem, this 28mm starling netting is enough and costs less per square metre.
Bird netting mesh size by species
The mesh has to be small enough that the target bird cannot push through it. These are the netting grades we sell cut to size:
| Bird | Mesh size | Cut to size net | Price per sq m inc. VAT | Intermediate fixings |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sparrows and other small birds | 19mm | Sparrow Netting 19mm Cut to Size | £1.56 | Every 0.3m |
| Starlings | 28mm | Starling Netting 28mm Cut to Size (this page) | £0.78 | Every 0.5m |
| Game birds, such as pheasant pens | 40mm | Pheasant Netting 40mm Cut to Size | £1.08 | Every 0.5m |
| Feral pigeons | 50mm | Pigeon Netting 50mm Cut to Size | £0.44 | Every 1m |
| Gulls | 75mm | Seagull Netting 75mm Cut to Size | £0.46 | Every 1m |

How to measure and order a cut to size net
- Measure the length and width of the opening or area you want to close off, in metres.
- Round each measurement up to the next whole metre, because nets are made to the nearest whole metre. You can trim the net on site.
- Choose the colour (black, stone or translucent), then enter the length and width in the boxes on this page. The page works out the total area in square metres and the price.
- Allow time for the net to be made before dispatch, and note the cut to size fee described below, which is charged once per order rather than per net.
For example, an opening of 3.6m by 2.4m is ordered as a 4m by 3m net, which is 12 square metres. At £0.78 per square metre that is £9.36 including VAT for the netting, plus the cut to size fee.
Which fixings do I need?
Each net needs corner fixings and a line of intermediate fixings between them, chosen for the surface: masonry, timber, structural steel or roofs. You can find them all under netting fixings, and our bird netting installation guide has a table matching each surface to its fixings. Netting Access Zips let you reach lights, gutters or plant behind the net, and netting shears trim the net on site.
Will 28mm netting keep out sparrows?
No. Sparrows need the finer 19mm mesh, because anything wider lets a sparrow through. Use 19mm sparrow netting wherever sparrows are part of the problem.
Is 50mm pigeon netting fine enough for starlings?
No. 50mm netting is sized for feral pigeons. Starlings need 28mm mesh.
Where is starling netting used?
It is used to close off cavities, canopies, loading bays and warehouses where starlings roost or nest. Our starling control page matches each starling problem to the right product.
All wild birds, including starlings and sparrows, are protected by law, and an active nest must not be disturbed, so net a nesting site only once the young have left. Our page on bird control and the law explains what you can and cannot do. If you would rather have the netting fitted, you can request an installation quote on our bird netting installation page.
