Where to put your Hawk Kite
Choose an open spot with at least 40m² of clear space, away from power lines, trees and anything else the kite could catch on. Set the telescopic pole 5 to 10 degrees off vertical, leaning away from the prevailing wind. That way the kite hangs clear of the pole when the air is still, rather than wrapping itself around it.
On soft ground, slide the pole over the ground post supplied. On walls, fences and other timber or masonry, the Hawk Kite Screw-In Fixing Kit holds the pole securely. For a temporary set-up, you can strap or cable tie the pole to an upright at least 1m tall.
Keeping it working
The kite’s constant movement is what makes it convincing, so check that it is always flying freely and has clear airspace around it, with nothing it could snag on. It works best as part of a wider plan: on buildings, use it alongside proofing such as bird spikes or bird netting on the ledges and roof areas birds use most.
The Hawk Kite is not a set-and-forget product. Check it daily for tangles, damage or wear, repair any damage straight away, and keep an eye on the weather forecast.
The kite is not suited to sites where birds are already nesting. All wild birds are protected and active nests must not be disturbed, so please read bird control and the law before you start.

Hawk Kite questions
Do hawk kites work?
A hawk kite imitates a bird of prey hovering over the area it guards. Because it moves with the wind, it keeps pest birds wary of the ground or roof below. You will get the best results when you check it regularly, keep it flying freely and use it alongside proofing where birds perch or roost on buildings.
Can I use the Hawk Kite as a seagull deterrent?
Yes. Gulls are one of the pest birds the Hawk Kite is used against, along with pigeons and starlings. For a fuller plan, including proofing for roofs and ledges, read our guide on how to keep seagulls away.
Can I put a hawk kite on a roof?
Yes, industrial and commercial roofs are among its most common uses. Fix the pole to timber or masonry with the screw-in fixing kit, and make sure the kite has at least 40m² of clear space with nothing it could tangle in.
How much wind does a hawk kite need?
Very little. The kite self-launches and flies in the lightest breeze. In strong winds, above Beaufort Force 6, tie it off or bring it down to avoid damage.
Can I buy spare parts for the Hawk Kite?
Yes. EnviroGuard offers a replacement kite with spars and a spare pole through Hawk Kite Bird Scarer Spares, so a damaged kit can be repaired rather than replaced.
