Pigeon proofing a typical home solar array yourself costs between £68 and £98 in materials, including VAT. That buys a complete 30 metre mesh kit, which is sized for a typical household array of around 16 panels. What the materials cost
Most homes need one 30 metre kit. The mesh runs around the outside edge of the array, closing the gap between the panels and the roof tiles where pigeons get in to nest. Each kit contains the mesh roll, the clips, stainless steel corner ties and a cutting tool, so you do not need to buy anything else.

The PVC coated mesh is black, so it is less noticeable against dark panels. Stainless steel costs a little more but will not corrode, which is worth considering near the coast. All of the mesh is 25mm by 12.5mm weldmesh on a 200mm wide roll.
Which clips you need decides which kit you buy
Check one panel before ordering, because it changes the price. If the panel frame has a lip on its underside, the standard push fit or adjustable clips hook over it, and the cheaper kits will do the job. If there is no lip, you need the Solar Mesh Speed Clip, which grips the side of the frame instead. Speed clips come in 30mm, 35mm and 40mm to match the depth of the frame, and the recommended spacing is five clips for every metre of mesh. That is why the speed clip kits include 150 clips and cost more. None of these systems involve drilling into the panel frame, so your panel warranty is not affected.
A worked example
Suppose your array is four panels wide and three panels deep, and each panel is roughly 1.7 metres by 1 metre. The outside edge of the array is about 6.8 metres along the top and bottom and 3 metres down each side, so the perimeter is around 20 metres. One 30 metre kit covers it with length to spare. If the frames have an underside lip, your total materials cost is £68.12 to £74.58. If they do not, it is £90.12 to £93.72 with speed clips.
Bigger arrays, or two separate arrays on different roof faces, may need more mesh. A 30 metre galvanised roll on its own is £34.08, a PVC coated roll is £30.48, and speed clips are 39p each.
What about spikes instead of mesh?
Some installers prefer spikes along the panel edge. The Solar Panel Proofing Kit includes 35 metres of Solarguard HDPE spikes with 150 or 300 speed clips, and costs £132 or £156.42. It is the more expensive route. For most homes the mesh kit is the simpler choice.
What affects the price of having it fitted
The materials are the smaller part of a fitted job. Most of the cost is safe access to the roof, which could mean a ladder system, a scaffold tower or a cherry picker depending on the height and the pitch. It also covers clearing out any nesting material and droppings from under the panels before the mesh goes on. Every roof is different, so a reliable price comes from a survey rather than a guess.
