Quick answer
Pigeon proofing a typical 16-panel (4kW) home solar array yourself costs £68.12 to £98.10 including VAT for a complete 30 metre mesh kit from the EnviroGuard shop, equivalent to about £4.26 to £6.13 per panel for a single 16-panel array (the real cost depends on the array’s perimeter and frame type, not the panel count). If your panels have no lip on the underside of the frame, you need a speed clip kit, which costs £90.12 to £93.72. Having it fitted by our recommended installer typically costs from £780 inc VAT (£650 + VAT), and most homes pay about £780 to £1,140 inc VAT.

Each kit has the mesh, the clips, stainless steel corner ties and a cutting tool; safe access equipment and PPE are not included. If you would rather have it fitted, the price depends mostly on getting safe access to the roof, such as a ladder system, a scaffold tower or a cherry picker, and you can request installation below.

How much does it cost to pigeon proof solar panels?
In materials, between £68.12 and £98.10 including VAT for a complete 30 metre kit. Most homes need one 30 metre kit. The mesh runs around the outside edge of the array, closing the gap between the panels and the roof tiles where pigeons get in to nest. Each kit contains the mesh roll, the clips, stainless steel corner ties and a cutting tool. Safe access equipment, PPE and cleaning materials are not included.
| Kit (30 metres) | Clips included | Price inc. VAT |
|---|---|---|
| PVC coated mesh kit with push fit clips | 60 push fit | £68.12 |
| Galvanised mesh kit with push fit clips | 60 push fit | £71.69 |
| Galvanised mesh kit with premium adjustable clips | 60 adjustable | £74.58 |
| PVC coated mesh kit with speed clips | 150 speed clips | £90.12 |
| Galvanised mesh kit with speed clips | 150 speed clips | £93.72 |
| Stainless steel mesh kit with premium adjustable clips | 60 adjustable | £98.10 |
The PVC coated mesh is black, so it is less noticeable against dark panels. Stainless steel costs a little more but will not corrode, which is worth considering near the coast. All of the mesh is 25mm by 12.5mm weldmesh on a 200mm wide roll.
Which clips you need decides which kit you buy
Check one panel before ordering, because it changes the price. If the panel frame has a lip on its underside, the standard push fit or adjustable clips hook over it, and the cheaper kits will do the job. If there is no lip, you need the Solar Mesh Speed Clip, which grips the side of the frame instead. Speed clips come in 30mm, 35mm and 40mm to match the depth of the frame, and the recommended spacing is five clips for every metre of mesh. That is why the speed clip kits include 150 clips and cost more. None of these systems involve drilling into the panel frame, which reduces one common warranty risk, but check your panel and mounting system warranties before fitting.
A worked example
Suppose your array is four panels wide and three panels deep, and each panel is roughly 1.7 metres by 1 metre. The outside edge of the array is about 6.8 metres along the top and bottom and 3 metres down each side, so the perimeter is around 20 metres. One 30 metre kit covers it with length to spare. If the frames have an underside lip, your total materials cost is £68.12 to £74.58. If they do not, it is £90.12 to £93.72 with speed clips.
Bigger arrays, or two separate arrays on different roof faces, may need more mesh. A 30 metre galvanised roll on its own is £34.08, a PVC coated roll is £30.48, and speed clips are 39p each.
What about spikes instead of mesh?
Some installers prefer spikes along the panel edge. The Solar Panel Proofing Kit includes 35 metres of Solarguard HDPE spikes with 150 or 300 speed clips, and costs £132 or £156.42. It is the more expensive route. For most homes the mesh kit is the simpler choice.
What affects the price of having it fitted
The materials are the smaller part of a fitted job. Most of the cost is safe access to the roof, which could mean a ladder system, a scaffold tower or a cherry picker depending on the height and the pitch. It also covers clearing out any nesting material and droppings from under the panels before the mesh goes on. Every roof is different, so a reliable price comes from a survey rather than a guess.
There is one legal point to check before any work starts. All wild birds, including pigeons, are protected, and it is an offence to take, damage or destroy a nest while it is in use or being built, so check for active nests under the panels first. Our guide to bird control and the law explains what you can and cannot do.
Having it fitted
If you would rather not work on the roof yourself, you can request installation through EnviroGuard. The work is carried out by our recommended installer, JG Pest Control, a sister company in the Tyro group. Fitted jobs typically cost from £780 inc VAT (£650 + VAT), and most homes pay about £780 to £1,140 inc VAT. That covers removing nests and nesting material from under the panels, clearing and disinfecting the gutters below, and fitting mesh around the array, normally in one visit using ladder access. Where a cherry picker or scaffold is needed, allow roughly £180 inc VAT (£150 + VAT) more. These figures come from JG Pest Control’s completed jobs over the last 12 months. A fitted price is confirmed after a survey of your roof, and our solar mesh installation guide explains how the mesh goes on and what the job involves.

Common questions
How much does it cost to pigeon proof solar panels in the UK?
If you fit it yourself, a complete 30 metre mesh kit costs between £68.12 and £98.10 including VAT (prices checked 19 October 2026), which covers a typical household array of around 16 panels. Having it fitted typically costs from £780 inc VAT (£650 + VAT), and most homes pay about £780 to £1,140 inc VAT. A fitted job is priced after a survey, because the cost depends mainly on safe access to the roof.
Is bird mesh better than spikes for solar panels?
Mesh closes the gap under the panels completely, which is where pigeons nest, and it is the cheaper option for most homes. Spikes along the edge can work well too, but the spike kit costs more.
Will fitting mesh affect my solar panel warranty?
The clips in these kits hold the mesh without drilling into the panel frame, which reduces one common warranty risk. Warranty terms vary, so check your panel and mounting system warranties, and ask the manufacturer or installer if you are unsure, before fitting.
